Siempelkamp receives another order in the area of nuclear disman-tling from the USA
The consortium SDS combines the companies AECOM Energy & Construction, Inc., Los Angeles and EnergySolutions Services, Inc., Salt Lake City. The nuclear power plant SONGS is located on the Pacific Ocean north of San Diego. The owner is the power generation company Southern California Edison (SCE). Both units with an electric power output of 1,070 MW were decommissioned for economic reasons in 2013.
Siempelkamp NIS will supply the necessary special tools as well as the expert technical support during the mechanical disassembly of the core internals and the subsequent thermal cutting of the reactor pressure vessels for both units.
Due to the high risk of radioactive contamination in this area of the nuclear power plant, the complete dismantling takes place remotely. Siempelkamp NIS Ingenieurgesellschaft mbH specializes in such highly complex tasks regarding the dismantling of nuclear installations. The company has proven its technical competence in several projects - most recently during the disassembly of the reactor pressure vessels and their core internals at the twin-unit power plant in ZION, USA.
The SONGS project is scheduled to be completed in 48 months. Within this time window the planning process, the manufacture of the dismantling tools, and the dismantling of the components for both units have to be carried out.
