Innovative in the service of the customer

Materials development is a constant topic at Siempelkamp Giesserei. Based on the ductile cast iron material GJS-400, which accounts for the majority of the approx. 60,000 tons produced at Siempelkamp each year, the following material properties are being systematically developed, improved and metallurgically implemented:

  • Strength
  • Vibration stability
  • Heat resistance
  • Toughness at subzero temperatures
  • Wear resistance

These developments are responsible for making it possible to use cast iron in the fields of turbine/compressor construction, wind turbines, the cement and minerals industry, mechanical engineering and in casks for the nuclear industry, and the optimization process continues.

Another focus of our developmental work lies in the optimization of process technologies. One project is for example engaged in the further development and implementation of advanced ultrasonic techniques for nodular graphite cast iron, for improved characterization of the material. A related process is the subsequent fatigue strength verification of the finished parts. We typically perform our research and development projects in cooperation with external partners and renowned research institutes.

Project “Megawind” on the upswing: Siempelkamp Giesserei is awarded Research and Innovation Prize

Siempelkamp Giesserei is contributing towards the new means of energy conversion in a highly specialized industry. This has been noted across the industries. In 2010, IHK Mittlerer Niederrhein (the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Middle Lower Rhine) awarded the Research and Innovation Prize to the company: they achieved fi rst place for their new material for structural components of wind turbines.
